Randall D. Eliason, former Chief, Public Corruption/Fraud Section, US Justice Department
Topics
Accountability; 2022 election
Days after the FBI executed a court-approved search warrant at his private residence in Florida, Donald Trump repeatedly invoked his 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination in the NY Attorney General's probe into bank, tax and insurance fraud allegations against him. Former DOJ official Randall Eliason separates the speculation from the facts in both investigations, and offers insight and analysis into what is known/not known, key aspects of criminal procedure, and potential pathways moving forward. Also today: noteworthy results from Tuesday's midterm primaries in CT, MN, WI, and VT. Trump-endorsed 2020 election deniers are winning the GOP nomination for state offices key to the 2024 Presidential election.

Inflation, interest rates and this strange economy
Economic historian Robert Brenner in conversation on this strange economic moment. What makes it strange? Inflation has dampened spending, the economy is shrinking, and many call it ‘shaky.’ Yet profits are strong and soaring, especially in the energy sector, in part because of Russia’s war on Ukraine. And job growth continues. Despite wage increases, workers’ wages overall are still lagging, but CEO pay is skyrocketing -- and the Fed continues to raise interest rates to curb inflation. Are they trying to induce a “mild” recession, avoid one, or just what? The moment is unique because of the pandemic, supply chain blockages and shortages, and Russia’s war wreaking havoc on the world economy. We get Robert Brenner’s analysis.

January 6th: Accountability
Encore - original airdate 7/14/22 A bipartisan group of former top-level Justice Department prosecutors say 'evidence is overwhelming' that Donald Trump directed the January 6 insurrection and must be prosecuted. Others are concerned the DOJ is moving too slowly, or not at all. Independent national security journalist Marcy Wheeler, who has perhaps the most comprehensive grasp of the sprawling investigations of January 6 than anyone else on the planet, counters that view. Wheeler explains the current status of the DOJ's various probes, new revelations from the House January 6 Committee, and scenarios that could lead to the prosecution of Trump and his top cronies.

Kansas 'political earthquake'; 2022 election; Vin Scully
Noteworthy results from Tuesday's primary elections in AZ, KS, MI, MO, WA, OH. In a landslide, Kansas voters resoundingly rejected a Republican state constitutional amendment to ban abortion. New 'Roe and Reform' initiative pushes Democrats to campaign on codifying abortion rights into federal law if they can get two more Senate seats to reform the filibuster. Trump-backed 2020 election deniers defeat moderates in Arizona GOP primary. Plus a heartfelt sign-off from legendary L.A. Dodgers announcer, Vin Scully, who passed away at 94.

Russia-Ukraine war; Elections; Environment
Primary elections in AZ, KS, OH, MI, MO and WA feature a bunch of Trump-backed 2020 election deniers who could cause very serious problems for democracy itself in 2024. Shipments of grain finally allowed to safely leave Ukrainian ports amid Russia's brutal, unjustified invasion of Ukraine. Foreign policy expert GEORGE BEEBE discusses nuanced and difficult questions in potential paths forward to peacefully resolving the seemingly intractable conflict, and offers insight into the potential geopolitical ramifications of Speaker Pelosi's visit to Taiwan. 'Big Lie' rightwing media outlet One American News (OAN) is about to go out of business. Donald Trump demands CNN to stop reporting on his 'Big Lie' efforts to steal the 2020 election. Leaked documents expose how monopoly utility Florida Power & Light used a web of dark money to manipulate politics and elections, prop up fake candidates, mount disinformation campaigns, and secretly take over at least one news site to attack its critics and promote its propaganda. Utility expert ALISSA JEAN SCHAFER explains the widening FPL scandal and the dark money playbook utilized by power utilities across the country. Also today: Comedian Jon Stewart has choice words for Republicans voting down healthcare for dying veterans.

Kentucky hit with historic rain and deadly flash floods. Senate Democrats reach deal with obstructionist Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) on landmark legislation that raises taxes on big corporations, lowers healthcare costs, and makes the largest investment in climate/clean energy in US history. Senate GOP retaliates by blocking expanded healthcare for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits. New polling suggests 'conventional wisdom' about the November 2022 midterm elections is changing in these un-conventional times. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'

Ukraine after five months of war
Bohdan Krawchenko, Ukraine expert, is just back from Kyiv, and brings us his view of the state of Russia’s war on Ukraine. It is day 151, or five months of the Kremlin’s irrational, brutal and reckless invasion, and the mission and goals have shifted. Russia no longer pretends it is de-Nazifying Ukraine, it now argues in favor of erasing Ukrainian national identity and forcing Ukrainians to be Russians. Analysts in the West, particularly in Europe where reduced flows of Russian natural gas and skyrocketing energy prices have wreaked havoc on their economies in the midst of a blistering heat wave, see Russia’s scorched earth war conduct persisting as a sign that Russia will prevail. So the pundits and analysts say Ukraine should cede territory to get a ceasefire, because Russia has the initiative. The view from Ukraine, as Bohdan Krawchenko reports, is that Russia is losing this war, has wasted thousands of lives, and is running out of troops and war materiel. Despite their huge costs and losses, Russia is getting more aggressive and brutal – as irrational as that may seem. Ukrainians in the occupied territories of the Donbas region have been forcibly deported to Russia or sent to filtration camps. The economic and climate consequences of the war are already apparent – but at least the immediate threat of a catastrophic global food crisis has been staved off by the agreement brokered on Friday to allow the export of millions of tons of grain that have been blockaded from Black Sea ports. We get Bohdan Krawchenko’s assessment, analysis, and prospects.

Special Coverage: House January 6 hearings, Day 8
Our special coverage of the House January 6 Committee hearings continues with opinion columnist HEATHER DIGBY PARTON of Salon and RICHARD ESKOW, columnist and host of The Zero Hour. In an incredibly information-dense hearing, the evidence and witnesses made clear that Trump was central to the plot to halt the peaceful transfer of power, betrayed his oath of office by refusing to take any action to stop the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol, and much, much more. Also today: a federal jury has convicted former Trump aide Steve Bannon on two counts contempt of Congress for ignoring lawful subpoenas from the J6 Committee.

January 6 investigations
A bipartisan group of former top-level Justice Department prosecutors say 'evidence is overwhelming' that Donald Trump directed the January 6 insurrection and must be prosecuted.

Warning: election subversion plot for 2024
A new lawsuit taken up by the US Supreme Court next year could legitimize the fringe 'independent state legislature' theory, which would give GOP-controlled state legislatures the power to overturn the will of the voters to steal the 2024 Presidential election. Potential solutions for stopping the slow-rolling coup include massive voter turnout in 2022. Also today: major developments in Britain, Japan, and Sri Lanka. Georgia district attorney subpoenas top Trump cronies in criminal probe into 2020 election subversion. Callers weigh in on all of the above...

Supreme Court Decisions, The End of Boris Johnson
Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean of Berkeley School of Law, on the just completed Supreme Court term, handing down decisions that overturned vast areas of law. The Court’s decisions ignored settled law and took away a Constitutional right in the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v Wade. Chemerinsky argues that this court did not follow a judicial methodology, legal principles or precedents: instead, a conservative majority on the court is making the Republican Party platform Constitutional law. We get Erwin’s analysis and ask what can be done.

Tariq Ali on the resignation of PM Boris Johnson, brought down by Tory ministers who decided Johnson’s personality and unethical conduct had gotten in the way of his politics, which they mostly support. Tariq Ali says that the Tories have been ruthless in dumping Prime Ministers who might lose them the next election, like Thatcher, May, and now Johnson – but Labour is only ruthless in removing a Leader who poses a threat to the extreme center. Under Keir Starmer, Labour has not challenged Johnson’s political record, or presented an attractive alternative to the Tories, so Boris Johnson is going, but Britain is still stuck with the same rightwing politics. We get Tariq's view.

Special Coverage: House J6 Committee hearings, Day 6
Encore: original airdate 6/28/2022. Lots of bombshells on Day 6 of the House January 6 Committee hearings. Former top Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson testified to Trump's fits of rage at key moments as the plot failed; how Trump and his top aides knew violence was likely on Jan. 6 but took no action to stop it; Trump knew his supporters were armed when he urged them to storm the Capitol to stop the peaceful transfer of power; top Trump insiders sought pardons for their roles in the failed coup attempt, and more. The J6 Committee also teased evidence of witness tampering to come. HEATHER DIGBY PARTON from Salon and JOHN AMATO of Crooks and Liars offer insight and analysis on the remarkable hearing.
