2022 Qatari World Cup: spectacle, politics, climate, labor
The People's Game hosts and creators Alan Minsky & Meleiza Figueroa on the 2022 Qatari World Cup. This is much more than soccer, but there is that too. They combine on-the-field analysis and discussions of the political, economic, and cultural subtexts of the World Cup. The emphasis is football, but we also get their analysis of the geopolitics of the World Cup, and it's intersection with climate, sport, society, rebellion, and everything else. The 2022 Qatari World Cup is all superlatives: the biggest sports spectacle in the world, with more people watching than have ever watched anything ever. It is also the most expensive ever, by a long shot. The Qatari government has spent a staggering $250 billion building and remodeling the city for the World Cup, a giant investment using sports for political influence.
David Goldblatt, author of "The Age of Football: Soccer and the 21st Century" discusses his recent article in the London Review of Books, “How to Get on TV” – a fuller discussion of FIFA politics and the many controversies of the 2022 Qatari World Cup. We see the brave protests and athletes sporting armbands expressing solidarity with women and the LGBTQ community; less visible is Qatar’s migrant labor force working in searing heat to build literally everything on temporary work visas, without rights, adequate pay, or decent housing.

Redistricting expert and author DAVID DALEY, Senior Fellow at FairVote, explains how if Republicans gain the US House majority, it will be thanks to gaming the electorate through aggressive, unlawful and unconstitutional racial and partisan gerrymandering, hijacking of independent redistricting commissions, and the help of corrupt courts. New data indicates inflation may be easing, but that's bad news according to Fox 'News.' The latest reported results in several key races, some with razor-thin margins. Encore: Original air-date 11/11/2022. The projected 'red wave' did not materialize for Republicans in the critical 2022 midterm elections, so why did rightwing and corporate media outlets get it so wrong? Data expert Tom Bonier, who got the 2022 election results right, explains the data they 'overlooked,' the flood of sketchy GOP polls over the last month that warped the corporate media's narrative and misled the public, the affect on voter turnout, and the structural bias issues at work. Also today: the latest reported results in AZ and NV, and a look into the ultimately false narratives hyped by Fox 'News' and corporate media. Donate to non-corporate KPFK!

In Arizona, Democratic Sec. of State Katie Hobbs reportedly won the governor's race over the very Trumpy GOP nominee Kari Lake (triggering a surprising response from Rep. JOHN NICHOLS of The Nation offers deep analysis of the 'remarkable' midterm elections that defied historical patterns, how sketchy polls and corporate media groupthink appear to have altered both parties' strategies, the surge in young voter turnout, and how Americans saw a clear choice between Republican extremism and Democratic progressivism. Americans in polls consistently cite the nature of campaign financing as perhaps the greatest threat to democracy. And increasingly, candidates self-finance. In the LA Mayor’s race alone, billionaire developer Rick Caruso spent at least $100 million of his own fortune. What legal issues does this sort of financing raise? What does it mean for candidate quality? In what ways does it challenge and potentially undermine democracy? Followed by, While the US Civil War ended slavery, it didn't end the political issues that caused the war. What exactly happened in the immediate aftermath of the war? The political divide in the US from the Civil War persists today. We discuss the history of the period and its impact on contemporary politics..

Living in Russia & Ukrainian frontlines during war
Jeremy Bigwood, investigative journalist, researcher, & photojournalist, brings his observations and perceptions about Russia and Ukraine, where he has been living off and on since 2017. Jeremy’s insights are especially valuable as he spent the last five years talking to ordinary Russians, in his words, not the intelligentsia – and this helps our understanding of those who support Putin and the so called special military operation, those who avoid taking a stance, and those who oppose Putin and the war. Jeremy left Moscow a week after Russia invaded Ukraine, going first to Odessa, then to the front lines near Mikolayiv, and from there to the front near Kherson. Jeremy returned to Washington DC a few months ago, bewildered by the divisions in the American left over the nature of the war, especially those who do not support Ukraine’s defensive war for national survival, and those who only see the US, NATO and Russia, leaving no agency for Ukraine.

2022 election fallout; Trump's bid for 2024
Disgraced former President Donald Trump announced his third run for President in a long, soporific speech on Tuesday. Congressional Republicans are embroiled in a circular firing squad over the GOP's dismal performance in the midterm elections. Opinion columnist HEATHER DIGBY PARTON of Salon and Hulaballoo analyzes the election, the splintered Republican Party, what to expect from the far-right GOP House majority, and Trump's bid for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Plus: debunking Trump's false statements about election security. MS voters, election officials delighted with voting on hand-marked paper ballots for the first time.

Please donate to KPFK! In Arizona, Democratic Sec. of State Katie Hobbs reportedly won the governor's race over the very Trumpy GOP nominee Kari Lake (triggering a surprising response from Rep. Liz Cheney) and Democrats have swept all statewide offices so far. US workers 1986; low wages & unaffordable housing LA 1988
We bring you part three of our tribute to Mike Davis, who died on October 25, beginning with an interview from July 1986 just after Mike completed his first book, "Prisoners of the American Dream," published on the centenary of May Day 1886. Mike discusses the political economy of Reaganism, or Reaganomics, which began with a frontal attack on unions, intensifying the employer and government offensive against organized labor. He also explains what makes the American Working class different.
In the second interview, from February 1988, David Diaz joins Mike in the discussion on LA politics, looking at what redevelopment in Los Angeles had wrought. LA, like the rest of the country, was switching from a manufacturing to a service economy, though manufacturing continued using very low wage immigrant labor in what were essentially sweatshops. Non-union workers could not afford the cost of housing, and the lack of affordable rents fed the growing homeless crisis. Janitors were leading the struggle for a decent life for workers in an atmosphere that was friendly neither to workers nor immigrants. We get a preview of Mike’s lifelong concerns about Los Angeles and workers fighting for a life with dignity and livable wages.

2022 Election; Corporate Media Failure
The projected 'red wave' did not materialize for Republicans in the critical 2022 midterm elections, so why did rightwing and corporate media outlets get it so wrong? Data expert Tom Bonier, who got the 2022 election results right, explains the data they 'overlooked,' the flood of sketchy GOP polls over the last month that warped the corporate media's narrative and misled the public, the affect on voter turnout, and the structural bias issues at work. Also today: the latest reported results in AZ and NV, and a look into the ultimately false narratives hyped by Fox 'News' and corporate media. Donate now to non-corporate KPFK!

2022 Midterm Election; Media failure
In the critical 2022 midterm elections, the hyped GOP 'red wave' did not materialize, and control of Congress remains undecided. We cover notable critical victories and losses at both the state and federal level. But the 'conventional wisdom' of pollsters and corporate media pundits was wildly off base in their foregone conclusion that Republicans would win big across the country. Many Trump-endorsed far-right election deniers failed. Young voters turned out in record numbers to hold the line and defend democracy and reproductive rights.

Corporate media's fixation on their 'doomsday for Democrats' narrative could provide a pretext for Republicans to falsely declare 'fraud' if Dems do well in the 2022 Election. New Jersey and Arizona saw similar voting system failures on Election Day when optical ballot scanners failed -- in NJ voters calmly continued voting, but in AZ, MAGA reactionaries went crazy, baselessly howling 'fraud'. Voters in Houston, TX were actually disenfranchised by voting system failures. Trump announced he will have a big announcement. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'

2022 Election Predictions; GOP sues to discard legal ballots
Last day to vote is Tuesday, Nov. 8th. A rare Blood Moon eclipse heralds the last day of voting in the critical 2022 midterm elections, which may be the last free and fair elections in the US -- we explain why. Republicans have filed 100+ lawsuits in hopes of disenfranchising voters in PA, MI, and WI and elsewhere by trying to discard perfectly legitimate ballots. Judge extends deadline for voters in GA who never received their absentee ballots. Callers weigh in on corporate media election coverage and what they think will happen on Election Day.

Brazil's election of Lula da Silva over Bolsonaro has provided hope that the country will retain its democratic institutions. We discuss the elections and the likely policy changes. Followed by, The campaign of John Fetterman for a Senate seat from Pennsylvania has produced some truly disturbing ableist discourses about the qualifications of persons with disabilities for public service. How is this ableist narrative framing the rights and abilities of persons with disabilities in the United States? What does this mean for persons with disabilities and their capabilities as elected officials? We explore this debate.

COVID: Medical Katrina; LA in the 60s
We continue our tribute to Mike Davis, who died October 25, with two interviews. The first aired March 22, 2020, just at the beginning of the COVID lockdown. Fifteen years earlier, Mike’s "The Monster at Our Door" warned of a coming global threat of viral catastrophe. In this interview, Mike considered the Coronavirus pandemic as the familiar monster now at our door, a biological crisis that poses huge challenges for neoliberal global capitalism. Mike called it a Medical Katrina, one that exposes the woeful unpreparedness of our disinvested public health system as well as the stark class divide of health care in the US. We follow with an interview with Mike Davis and co-author Jon Wiener, discussing their 2020 compelling history of Los Angeles in the 1960s, a hotbed of political, social and cultural upheaval and rebellion, "Set the Night on Fire."

Our Champions: an Assemblymember from urban Los Angeles and a Representative of a primarily small-town Massachusetts district are fighting for safe streets and biking in similar ways.

California's 43rd Assemblymember and Transportation Committee Chair Laura Friedman wrote the revolutionary legislation that ended parking minimums near transit in the state of Califlornia. If that weren't enough, her "Omnibike" law addresses a number of California bicycle laws to improve safety and save lives, requiring cars to change lanes when possible to pass cyclists, permitting cyclists to go when a walk sign is on at intersections, prohibiting local municipalities from requiring bike registration, and permitting e-bike riders to use city bike paths.

On the opposite coast, Massachusetts' 1st District Representative Lindsay Sabadosa's Act to Reduce Traffic Fatalities requires that motorists leave a safe distance when passing vulnerable road users, requires MassDOT to develop a reporting system for crashes involving vulnerable road users, lets towns and cities establish a 25 mph speed limit on state-owned roads, and requires any large vehicle owned or leased by the state to have a set of safety devices. Sabadosa's 148/H.286 facilitates and expands conversion of abandoned rail lines into public trails for use as pedestrian walkways and bicycle paths.

Galen Mook, Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition's Executive Director, hosts this conversation with Laura Friedman and Lindsay Sabadosa.

2022 Midterm Elections - Saving Democracy
New strong jobs report shows the economy is slowing slightly due to the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes. But corporate media's focus on inflation has failed to inform the public of the danger to democracy itself in the critical 2022 midterm elections next Tuesday, November 8, with hundreds of far-right Republican election deniers running for office and openly plotting to engineer the GOP into permanent minority rule. ALAN MINSKY -- Bernie Sanders supporter, former program director at KPFK, and current Executive Director of Progressive Democrats of America -- warns that reactionary Republicans are now 'emboldened to take down American democracy in their efforts to create a permanent ruling party,' and makes the progressive case for voting for the decidedly imperfect Democratic Party to preserve democracy, free and fair elections, and the future of the progressive agenda.

2022 Election; Environment
New reporting reveals Republicans' coordinated national strategy to manufacture chaos in next Tuesday's critical 2022 midterm elections (potentially the last free and fair elections in the US), with the goal of creating pretext to launch legal challenges of election results they don't like. Run by the same grifters and Trump operatives who tried to overthrow the government after the 2020 election, the scheme includes voter intimidation, voter challenges, disrupting voting at polling places and tabulation, and more. Illinois Republicans sue to discard legal ballots of military and overseas voters. New developments in investigations of Donald Trump. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'

2022 Election - Prepare for 'manufactured chaos'
With the critical November 8 midterm elections fast-approaching, voters should be prepared for election challenges and even 'manufactured chaos,' warns EDDIE PEREZ, election technology expert. Perez explains why MAGA Republicans are a threat to our democracy, the kinds of 'manufactured chaos' and disinformation that may unfold, and actions voters and election officials can take to prepare for and defend against them. Also today: a flood of election lawsuits, including a ruling in PA allowing the state to reject absentee ballots over minor technical errors.
