Warning: 'Independent State Legislature' theory to subvert democracy
|
Warning: Next year, the corrupt, rightwing US Supreme Court will hear a lawsuit intended to legitimize the fringe legal theory known as the Independent State Legislature doctrine, a phony, made-up concept that declares state legislatures have sole authority over election administration, unchecked by state courts, governors, or state constitutions, with absolute power to overturn the voters' will and substitute their own slate of electors in presidential elections. Corrupt Ginni Thomas (wife of Justice Clarence Thomas) refuses to testify to House J6 Commitee. CA lawmakers reject unsecurable internet voting. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'

Supreme Court guts EPA authority, and other rulings
|
In a 6-3 decision, the Republicans' radical rightwing Supreme Court super-majority stripped the EPA of authority to regulate climate-warming emissions from power plants and act on the climate crisis, which could also curtail other federal agencies' actions. Slate's Supreme Court expert Mark Joseph Stern delves into the details of the ruling and its implications, other shocking rulings handed down by the rightwing Court in just the last few days, options for court reform, and an ominous case next term that could spell the end of American democracy.

2022 Primary results; 'UNconventional wisdom'; Environment
|
Noteworthy results from critical midterm primary elections in IL, CO, OK, UT, NY , MS, SC, and NE, that include 2020 election deniers, wildly corrupt former Trump officials, and radical rightwing extremists. Some results indicate voters' rising rage over the rightwing US Supreme Court striking down women's constitutional rights to reproductive choice indicate that 'conventional wisdom' over the upcoming 2022 midterm elections may be premature during these decidedly un-conventional times. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'

Special coverage of House J6 Hearing, Day 6
|
Lots of bombshells on Day 6 of the House January 6 Committee hearings. Former top Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson testified to Trump's fits of rage at key moments as the plot failed; how Trump and his top aides knew violence was likely on Jan. 6 but took no action to stop it; Trump knew his supporters were armed when he urged them to storm the Capitol to stop the peaceful transfer of power; top Trump insiders sought pardons for their roles in the failed coup attempt, and more. The J6 Committee also teased evidence of witness tampering to come. HEATHER DIGBY PARTON from Salon and JOHN AMATO of Crooks and Liars offer insight and analysis on the remarkable hearing.

What are the US Supreme Court's decisions from this year's docket? We will explore some of these decisions and what it means for the future of American law. What does the leftist turn in Latin American elections mean for the politics of the region? Is it a response to neoliberalism? Is it a response to the endemic corruption in the region? Gustavo Petro's historic victory in Colombia
|
Forrest Hylton on the historic June 19 Colombian Presidential election. Historic because for the first time a progressive government was elected with Gustavo Petro, former mayor of Bogota and his VP, the Afro-Colombian environmental activist and human rights lawyer Francia Marquez, on a platform promising a green transition, tackling climate change while creating new jobs with labor rights and more. Their election spells the end of the far right militarist politics that has dominated Colombia and promises new relationships in the region and with the US. We get Forrest Hylton’s assessment of the Petro’s victory, the challenges ahead, and what it means for the hemisphere.

Rightwing SCOTUS overturns Roe v. Wade; Environment
|
In a dark week in American history, the unelected extremist Republican super-majority packed onto the stolen US Supreme Court canceled reproductive rights, allowing states to force women into childbirth against their will, and disregarded the Constitution's plain text ('well-regulated') to cancel states' rights to regulate firearms. Justices Alito and Thomas fabricated justifications for rescinding rights, and Thomas called for overturning rights to contraceptives, same-sex marriage and intimacy. Pres. Biden detailed actions to defend reproductive freedoms and called on Americans to vote in November. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'

Special Coverage: House January 6 hearings
|
Day 5 of the House Jan. 6 Committee's public hearings detailed another pillar of Trump's multi-pronged scheme to steal the 2020 election from the American people: his failed attempt to decapitate Justice Department leadership and install a low-level apparatchik to do his bidding. Three former top DOJ officials revealed how narrowly the nation averted an unprecedented constitutional crisis. The J6 Committee revealed that 6 GOP congressman sought pardons for their part in the coup attempt. Columnist HEATHER DIGBY PARTON of Salon, and LISA GRAVES, former U.S. Deputy Asst. Attorney General and Deputy Chief for the US Court system, now current Exec. Director of True North Research, offer deep insight and analysis into the day's proceedings. Also: Rightwing SCOTUS overturned states' rights to regulate firearms, and undercut Miranda rights.

The House Jan. 6 hearings show that Georgia's GOP Sec. of State Brad Raffensperger did the right thing in not helping Donald Trump steal the 2020 election. But election security expert Marilyn Marks explains that Raffensperger is not a hero, due to GA's 'sloppy' procedures and voter suppression laws, and delves into disturbing details of how Raffensperger's office appears to be covering up a serious breach of the state's voting system carried out by Trump supporters and GOP election officials in Coffee County. DOJ issues new subpoenas to fake Trump electors. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'

Special coverage of Day 4 of the bipartisan House January 6 Committee hearings investigating the Jan. 6 Insurrection and Trump's multiple failed efforts to steal the 2020 election and overthrow the government. Progressive commentators Heather 'Digby' Parton of Salon and 'Driftglass' of the Professional Left Podcast offer insight and analysis of the day's proceedings, as the committee presented in detail the facts of how loser Trump was central to the coup plot. Nevada GOP nominee for Sec. of State is a 2020 election denier and fake elector who said he would not have certified Biden's 2020 win in the critical swing state. We debunk Trump's laughable 12-page 'rebuttal' to the House January 6 Committee's investigation into his attempt to steal the 2020 election. A House J6 video preview focuses on Trump's corrupt pressure campaign against VP Mike Pence.

Salon's opinion columnist HEATHER DIGBY PARTON delves into the revelations from Monday's hearing -- including damning testimony from top officials and campaign aides about how Trump knew he lost the 2020 election but continued to lie relentlessly, how he bilked his supporters out of $250 million that did not go to legal challenges but into his own pocket, and more. A mother, a father, and a grandmother of young people killed by cars have used their experience to organize for safer streets.
Lizi Raman, Beverly Shelton, and Dr. Frank Cruz speak with Bike Talk hosts Lindsay Sturman and Galen Mook.
Lizi got a bike lane installed on Queens Boulevard in NYC, the infamous "Boulevard of Death," transforming it into a "Boulevard of Life." Lizi began organizing after her son Asif was killed riding his bike on Queens Boulevard.
5 year old Zachary was killed by a car in a crosswalk in Berkeley, California. "Grandma" Beverly Shelton founded Families for Safe Streets Southern California, and her son, Dr. Frank Cruz, founded The Zachary Michael Cruz Foundation.

DLC New Democrats many failures
|
Lily Geismer's new book, "Left Behind: The Democrats’ Failed Attempt to Solve Inequality"" explores the Democratic Party’s promotion of market-based solutions to social problems. She takes us on a tour through what will be for many a trip down memory lane – and it isn’t pretty. We get the origin and development of the Democratic Leadership Council or DLC, the ways Bill Clinton came to personify it, and how their politics changed the Democratic Party: running away from the politics of The New Deal and the Great Society to embrace essentially Republican ideas dressed up with the language of empowerment. No wonder Clinton was so hated by the Republicans, who saw him stealing their program. Geismer takes us through the various applications of the ideas defining the New Democrats in community development banking, destroying public housing, promoting charter schools, empowerment zones, microenterprise, free trade -- and shows the disasters left behind. We know it as neoliberalism, they call it “doing well by doing good.” We see the way figures like Jesse Jackson, Al Gore, Robert Reich, Barack Obama, and Joseph Biden ‘develop’ in this narrative with great import for today as we head to the midterms, and the DLC is busy blaming the left for the Democrats poor showing to come. Lily Geismer makes the connections.

Encore: Original airdate 5/9/2022.Today we debunk the new pretend documentary from convicted rightwing election fraudster and rightwing activist Dinesh D'Souza, "2000 Mules," which, among a host of fabricated claims for which it presents no evidence, also absurdly asserts that publicly-available cell phone geo-location data somehow proves people used secure ballot drop boxes to 'steal' the 2020 election from Trump. White Republican in AZ receives slap on the wrist for intentionally committing voter fraud, highlighting deep racial disparities in sentencing of black and brown voters who mistakenly, unknowingly tried to vote while ineligible.
