Democracy is eroding in the United States. What are the causes and what should be done? Is the erosion of democracy because of political elites and specifically the reaction of the Republican Party to the 2020 election? Or does it run deeper?

Israel/Gaza: A Political Solution?
|
Alan Minsky was in conversation with Israeli historian & Genocide studies scholar Omer Bartov at a public forum this week about the Israel/Gaza crisis. Their conversation focuses on the necessity of relaunching serious negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians to achieve a just, long term political solution to the 75 year conflict in Greater Israel/Palestine, a demand they insist activists and the left in general should foreground immediately. Professor Bartov puts forward his proposal for a political solution that Alan Minsky describes as a “Confederated State Solution, neither a one-state nor a two-state solution, but something in-between.” The proposal can be found on the website A Land for All.org.

Maggie's special guest is John McDermott, John is a director, writer, producer and the Catalog Director for the Jimi Hendrix family company Experience Hendrix. He has along with Janie Hendrix and Eddie Kramer, co-produced every Jimi Hendrix CD and DVD release
McDermott has also written five books on Jimi Hendrix, including 1992's Hendrix: Setting The Record Straight, which was praised by Chas Chandler, the man who discovered, managed and produced the legendary guitarist, as the best book ever written about Hendrix.
Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live At The Hollywood Bowl: August 18, 1967 This recording has never before been released or even bootlegged. It captures the Jimi Hendrix Experience at a unique moment in their illustrious career. Before a sold out audience of 17,000 people, the Experience overwhelmed an unsuspecting audience with a superb show that encompassed his renditions of songs by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters as well as signature songs such as “Purple Haze” and “The Wind Cries Mary”. Are You Experienced, the group’s debut album, had not yet been released by Jimi’s label Reprise.

Election Security: Coffee County Breach
|
PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! Journalist Anna Bower reports on the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's long-awaited criminal investigative report into Team Trump's effort to unlawfully breach, copy, and distribute Georgia's statewide voting system software in Coffee County on Jan. 7, 2021. Bower explains how the agency inexplicably omitted significant, publicly-available evidence, failed to interview key players in the plot to breach voting system security, the refusal of Georgia's top election officials to apply security upgrades, and why it matters to the 2024 Presidential election in the critical battleground state.

PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! Warning signs for democracy are blinking bright red, in the US and abroad. Ultra-conservative Judge Michael Luttig warns a second term for Trump would be 'catastrophic.' Trump promises domestic deployment of US military under Insurrection Act if elected in 2024. Biden invoked Defense Production Act to boost domestic manufacturing of super-efficient all-electric heat pumps. Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'

Court guts Voting Rights Act; Israel-Hamas War
|
PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! The 8th Circuit Court of Appeal has upheld a ruling gutting what remains of the landmark Voting Rights Act, declaring that private organizations like the NAACP have no right to challenge voter suppression laws. JONATHAN TOPAZ of the ACLU's Voting Rights Project explains the challenge to Arkansas' racially-discriminatory voting maps, the 'radical' ruling and what it means for voting rights. Israel and Hamas will extend their pause in hostilities to release more hostages from Gaza. A white male suspect was arrested in the shooting of three college students of Palestinian descent in Vermont.

Biden, Trump, and Media's Failure to Inform the Public
|
PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! New polls show that President Biden's policies are wildly popular with the vast majority of Americans, yet most of the public has no idea that Biden has enacted them. The public also is unaware of the chilling facts of what Donald Trump himself has vowed to do if he is re-elected in 2024. Mainstream media outlets are failing to inform the public of basic facts, but why? We sort out the facts from the fictions, and callers weigh in. Original airdate 11-13-2023.

Original airdate 11-2-2023. On today's 'BradCast': We dig deep to explore several fascinating, mysterious stories, some of which may remain a riddle for all time. No matter what you may read on the Internet, Brad is not actually dead...as far as he knows. Why did the U.S. quietly 'pause' gun exports for the next 90 days, a little over a week ago, and why haven't any of us heard about it until now? Why does elected GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson appear to have no bank accounts or assets of any type? Is that even possible? Why did 31 House Democrats vote AGAINST expelling serial liar and federally-indicted New York Republican Rep. George Santos? The answer may surprise you. 2024 GOP Presidential candidate Nikki Haley says she supports term limits for member of Congress - - but does she support term limits for the stolen and packed rightwing supermajority on the U.S. Supreme Court? The Biden Administration just unveiled $5 billion in new funding for rural America, the biggest investment in decades. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'

Republican-controlled U.S. House finally selects a new Speaker, far-right Trump ally Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA), who is a 2020 election denier, insurrection insider, and ardent opponent of reproductive rights and LGBTQ rights. PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! Donald Trump/Republicans are still denying climate change and spreading disinformation about climate solutions and renewable energy. Meanwhile, the blockbuster new 5th National Climate Assessment details the undeniable and costly climate disasters already affecting every corner of the US, and the broad array of existing tools to mitigate its impacts. The US/China just signed a climate cooperation agreement. DR. JESSICA MOERMAN, President and CEO of the Evangelical Environmental Network, and policy expert MATTHEW LEE explain new legislation from three Senate Republicans - a carbon border adjustment tax that could attract GOP support, reduce emissions, bring jobs back to the US, and much more.

|
We sort out the facts from the fictions, and callers weigh in...

UAW historic strike victory
|
Nelson Lichtenstein returns to talk about the Tentative Agreements (TAs) the United Auto Workers (UAW) reached with the Big Three auto companies after six weeks on strike, the first time the UAW ever hit the Detroit Three at once. Nelson says the UAW strike victory is historic and transformative, ending a 43 year era of concession bargaining and labor movement defeat. “With its successful strike, the UAW has broken with decades of concessions, won on pay and workplace democracy, and launched a new national labor leader. There’s much more organizing to be done, but this is an unmitigated victory for the entire working class.” We talk to Nelson about the transformative nature of this victory -- the best news in the world today – and get his broader perspective on what it means for American politics and the working class writ large.
