House Jan. 6 Select Committee votes unanimously to hold Trump crony Steve Bannon in criminal contempt of Congress. Senate GOP filibusters voting rights legislation for third time this year. Slate's Supreme Court expert Mark Joseph Stern explains the troubling conclusions in a draft report issued by Pres. Biden's blue ribbon commission examining ways to reform the Republican's packed and stolen U.S. Supreme Court - including court expansion and judicial term limits - noting that the US is the only country in the world to give its high court so much power and lifetime appointments. Stern also explains the legal rollercoaster of the blatantly unconstitutional Texas abortion law.

Former Sec. of State Colin Powell has died from COVID-related complications amid a lengthy cancer battle; despite rightwing media's dishonest claims, the facts show that the unvaccinated helped kill Powell. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) may succeed in killing a crucial climate policy in Biden's Build Back Better bill. Callers weigh in on whether Democratically-controlled states should match Republicans' use of extreme, unfair partisan gerrymandering during redistricting of new legislative maps that will determine the balance of power in the U.S. House.

The death penalty in the United States has faced increased opposition based on ethical, political, and legal concerns. Several states have outlawed it, but the federal government has returned to its use with a feverish wave of state executions last year. We discuss the implications of the use of the death penalty in the US and examine additional forms of extreme sentencing, such as life without parole.

IATSE strike talks; US workers in a militant mood
Crystal Hopkins, President of IATSE Local 871 joined us just hours before a tentative agreement was reached late Saturday afternoon -- ahead of the October 18 strike deadline. The contract still has to be ratified by union members. Crystal Hopkins describes the conditions and demands that are at the center of the negotiations: long working hours, low wages and not being fairly compensated for the success of streaming service content they contribute to, with IATSE workers recounting stories like falling asleep while driving, working 17-hour days and being unable to take time off. Listen in, we cover the issues at stake.

Alex Press, staff writer at Jacobin and labor podcaster, has been tracking the current strike wave that some are calling Strike-tober. 10,000 John Deere UAW workers are on strike for the first time since first since 1986. 2000 nurses are on strike at a Catholic Health hospital in New York, 1400 workers at Kellogg’s cereal plants across the country, 1100 coal miners at Warrior Met in Alabama, and 420 United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) members at Heaven Hill Distillery in Kentucky. Sixty thousand workers at IATSE may still strike; Instacart workers have an Oct 18 work action; 24,000 workers at Kaiser Permanente are poised to walk out, and there are organizing drives at Amazon, and now Starbucks. So how do we characterize and explain this militancy? Alex’s latest article, "US Workers are in a Militant Mood" looks at these strikes and campaigns now underway and we get her take on the big picture for labor.

Should Dems use extreme gerrymandering?; Voting Rights
The fate of Democrats' Freedom To Vote Act, which would expand and defend voting rights and prevent extreme partisan gerrymandering, will be put up for a test vote in the US Senate next week, against a GOP filibuster. Gerrymandering expert David Daley details the GOP's assault on voting rights across the country with new extreme partisan gerrymandering of legislative maps in advance of the crucial 2022 midterm elections. Should Democrats respond with equally extreme partisan district maps where possible, as the U.S. teeters ever closer to unstoppable authoritarianism? Plus: VA GOP state candidate has wildly idiotic ideas about rising sea levels...

k for an update on the state of play in passing the Build Back Better Reconciliation and Infrastructure Bills. The Progressives are using their leverage because the BBB bill is connected to the so-called bipartisan infrastructure bill the centrists want to whittle down. Media coverage has mischaracterized this as a split in the Democratic Party rather than as the LA Times did Saturday, getting it right: there are two holdouts while the rest of the Dems are behind Biden’s agenda. It’s all riveting and we get Alan’s analysis of what lies underneath, which players have more weight, the tactics employed, and what he sees as the possible outcome.
Meleiza Figueroa, lead author on the new Dispatch from Pandemic Research for the People "To Live and Die in Los Angeles: COVID-19, Structural Stress, and the Path to a More Resilient Public Health." The dispatch identifies the ways COVID merged with and reinforced existing crises generated by a neoliberalized economy with labor precarity, housing instability, homelessness, psychosocial stress, lack of healthcare and social safety net access, contributing to the tenacity of the pandemic – and pointing to the social vulnerability to future pandemics and natural disasters. It’s a comprehensive analysis focusing on what LA County has done right and what more has to be done.

Rightwing media and grifters are predictably denying AZ 'audit' report showing Biden won the 2020 election, and are circulating a fraudulent version that Cyber Ninjas says is 'absolutely false'. AZ Sen. Kyrsten Sinema's intransigence set to kill crucial legislation and Biden's Build Back Better agenda. The corporate media blamed policing reform for the dramatic spike in FBI crime statistics -- ACLU's CARL TAKEI explains what the new data actually show, why the reporting was inaccurate, and community-based solutions that are proven to reduce violent crime rates. Plus: L.A. County expunges the records of another 60,000 marijuana-related convictions.

Biden's infrastructure package; Occupy 10 Years After
Alan Minsky discusses the Biden infrastructure plan, an historic bill for an historic moment. As Director of PDA, Alan is involved in the politicking to get this bill passed and we get his take on the stakes involved, who of the Democrats could scuttle it, and why. Though we have had the COVID relief or CARES Act passed, Biden’s infrastructure bill is different because it creates permanent and progressive public policy. COVID gives Congress the opportunity, for the first time since the 1960s-1970s, to reclaim its power to address the social ills of the US through classical social democratic welfarist policy. That is what makes the fight so momentous and consequential, and we get the story.
Arun Gupta traveled the country visiting and writing about the many Occupy sites, chronicling the emerging politics that brought the issues of inequality, wealth redistribution and even democratic socialism to the forefront of political attention. His In These Times article on Occupy's tenth anniversary called “Occupy Wall Street Trained a Generation in Class War” looks at how Occupy shaped a decade of dramatic protests. We get Arun’s take on Occupy's legacy, significance and relevance today.

National media has confirmed our first-in-the-nation scoop on the hilarious results of the partisan AZ 'audit' of the 2020 election, showing that Joe Biden did indeed win over Donald Trump. Climate scientist Dr. Peter Kalmus discusses his latest essay, which warns that pledges to reach 'net zero by 2050' are fatally flawed, heavily reliant on 'negative emissions technologies' not yet invented, as nations move too slowly to end use of fossil fuels. Kalmus explains actions that individuals can take, and policies that may ultimately be required to avoid catastrophic climate impacts, radical though they may seem today.

Exclusive: The final report on the ridiculous, partisan, so-called 'audit' of the 2020 election in Maricopa Co., AZ -- set to be released on Friday -- confirms that Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump. The report also finds zero evidence of widespread fraud, as falsely claimed by Republicans. Congressional Republicans are once again holding the nation hostage, vowing to block an increase in the nation's debt ceiling (which pays for stuff already approved by Congress long ago) and threatening to force a full government shutdown, again - both actions that will wreak havoc on the U.S. economy. Nihilist Congressional Republicans are trying to tank the U.S. economy for political purposes by refusing to raise the ridiculous 'debt ceiling', which pays for debts Congress (including Republicans) already incurred. Congressional historian NORM ORNSTEIN explains the stakes for the nation at this critical juncture, and offers several avenues by which Democrats can prevent the GOP from killing the economy, implement crucial social safety net programs, and pass Pres. Biden's Build Back Better proposals and voting rights protections to counter the tsunami of voter suppression and election subversion bills in GOP-controlled states. Ornstein also talks about his starring role in former Sen. Al Franken's hilarious, shockingly prescient 1998 satirical novel.
