Music From Around The World And Around The Block!
|
Today's Global Village, Wed. January 15, 2025 Derek Rath takes a retrospective view of some of the releases that tickled our fancy during 2024. Sometimes it is the song, sometimes the just sound, sometimes the virtuosity but all warranted another listen. As usual we find wonderful cultural and experiential connections that link us all together through music. African rhythms, Scottish fiddles, Chinese pipas, flamenco passions, Brazilian voices and American jazz and soul mingle through the new music of Mulatu Astake, Nation Beat, Lizz Wright, King Jammy, Gao Hong, Afro Celt Sound System and a host of others in a wonderful continuance of human expression. The Global Village from 11am-1pm PT Monday thru Friiday's on KPFK 90.7FM Los Angeles on online https://www.kpfk.org/

The city of Los Angeles is ablaze with intense and widespread fires. This is unprecedented; the worse fires in the history of the city and among the worse in the history of the United States. What role does climate change, forest management, overpopulation, and resource management play in the increasingly devastating fire seasons worldwide? How can climate mitigation and adaptation complicate forest management?

PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! The January 6th certification of the 2024 Electoral College results in Congress was peaceful and carried out without insurrection or terror attacks on the U.S. Capitol, as incited by the former President, now President-elect, four years ago today. NY judge upholds Donald Trump's hush money guilty verdict. Corporate media omitting that New Orleans domestic terror attack was carried out by a hardcore Trump supporter. The late President Jimmy Carter was an environmental champion. Callers weigh in.

L.A. Is My Lady 40th Anniversary Release F Sinatra & Q Jones
|
Maggie speaks with Sinatra Enterprises President Charlie Pignone about the 40th Anniversary of L.A. Is My Lady. Frank Sinatra reunited for this album, his last studio effort, with producer Quincy Jones, with whom he'd last worked 20 years earlier for the classic album, It Might as Well Be Swing with Count Basie. Originally released in 1984, L.A. Is My Lady was a high-energy event, hitting the Billboard 200 and Top 10 on the Jazz Albums chart. It featured the title song, which got into MTV rotation, and Sinatra's first recording of "Mack the Knife." Musical guests include George Benson, Lionel Hampton and Bob James. Legendary songwriter Sammy Cahn wrote new lyrics for "Teach Me Tonight" and "Until the Real Thing Comes Along." For this 40th anniversary release, Sinatra engineer Larry Walsh created new mixes for the original album, which is available on standard black vinyl. Also available on CD and digital release.

The history of anti-slavery activism is a rich and important period in American history. But there are so many stories that still have yet to be written. Samuel Ward is one of those activists; an important figure in the African-American activist community working against slavery and racism, whose story is largely lost. Our guest R. J. M. Blackett is addressing this need to tell Wards story in a new book, Samuel Rigghold Ward: A life of a Struggle.

2024 Election; Defending environment/climate gains
|
Encore: original airdate 11-12-2024. On today's 'BradCast': Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego won Arizona's U.S. Senate seat against Republican election denier Kari Lake, one of several updates on key 2024 races. Control of the U.S. House remains undecided. Donald Trump rapidly nominated a number of cabinet appointees, including ultra far-right Tom Homan as 'border czar', who supported Trump's cruel family separation policies in his first term, and vows to carry out mass deportations. Oil and coal lobbyists on Trump's EPA transition team plot to gut the agency and pivot to fossil fuels, reverse US climate and pollution rules, and more. JEAN SU, Director of the Energy Justice Program at the Center for Biological Diversity, explains actions the Biden Administration can take now to protect hard-won gains and advance climate and environmental goals, ways environmental groups can defend against and delay Trump's anti-environment onslaught, and much more. Plus Desi Doyen has our new 'Green News Report.'

PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! Original airdate 12-4-2024. Investigative financial journalist David Dayen explains how Donald Trump's threats to impose massive tariffs on goods imported into the US will raise prices on everyday Americans, and also open up 'mind-boggling' opportunities for unprecedented corruption from corporate interests to buy favoritism from Trump, deepening America's slide into oligarchy. Rightwing pundit Dinesh D'Souza apologized for his 2020 election conspiracy film, '2000 Mules,' acknowledging it was false and inaccurate. Democrats flip US House seat in final 2024 race, leaving Republicans with a razor-thin majority.

Money can distort politics. And the lack of transparency where this money comes from can further distort politics and invite corruption. Since much of the money in campaign finance is not subject to transparency laws, it has taken the name dark money. This specifically references spending by nonprofit organizations created for political spending. How much has dark money skewed American democracy? What role does transparency in spending play in ensuring the legitimacy of democracies?
