Yoav Peled
Topics
Israeli politics, nationalism and religion
Yoav Peled on the outcome of Israel’s 4th election in 2 years, ending Benjamin Netanyahu's long reign. Netanyahu unleashed a major shock and awe campaign against Gaza for 11 days last month -- like in November 2019, to deflect attention from his own legal problems and his inability to form a governing coalition. This time Hamas rockets and Israeli bombs failed to save Netanyahu’s hold on power and prevent a more moderate coalition from upending his rule. Neftali Bennet, far right leader of the tiny Yamina (Rightward) party will be PM for two years, yielding to his secular-centrist coalition partner Yair Lapid for the next two years. Netanyahu, facing criminal corruption charges, warns ‘he’ll be back.’ Yoav Peled clarifies what this means, and explains the dynamics of nationalism and religion in Israel among both Muslims and Jews.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), has been blocking voting rights reform bill, the For The People Act. Today Manchin released a list of 'compromise' points, offering a path forward on critical democracy reforms to counter a wave of GOP state voter suppression laws. National security journalist Marcy Wheeler explains unreported details of the Trump DOJ's stunning surveillance of Democratic congress members who Trump regarded as his political enemies. Wheeler explains the lack of judicial oversight and limits on data collection (which Democratic lawmakers have previously defended), and actions that lawmakers must take to protect the public.

Castillo victory in Peru
Nicolas Allen of Jacobin America Latina on the June 6 nail-biter election in Peru. Socialist trade unionist Pedro Castillo, from an indigenous background, has won the presidency by less than 1%. His victory represents a devastating defeat for Peru’s populist neoliberal politics, represented by his rightwing opponent Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori – who sits in jail for corruption. Castillo’s campaign slogan was "No more poor people in a rich country." The deeply unpopular Fujimori’s campaign resorted to relentless anti-communist scaremongering. We get Nicolas Allen’s explanation of the surprise result, situating the rejection of Fujimori in the larger context of the crisis of neoliberal rule, popular revolt, and the raging pandemic.

Trump DOJ spying on Congress; How billionaires pay no taxes
Blockbuster revelations show how Trump's wildly corrupt Justice Department spied on members of Congress, even while blocking legal congressional subpoenas. Stunning ProPublica report demolishes the myth that the rich pay more in taxes than everyone else, revealing how America's billionaires have paid little to no federal taxes on their vast wealth. Mother Jones Senior Editor Michael Mechanic explains how the super-rich take advantage of loopholes to legally pay zero taxes, how it hurts average Americans and the nation as a whole, and what actions can be taken to repair a tax system that rewards wealth over actual work.

Election integrity in NH audit; Politics; Environment
Something weird happened in an election in Windham, NH in the 2020 election, and thanks to a team of experts in voting systems, cyber-security and post-election audits, we now know why. Prof. Philip Stark of UC Berkeley explains the painstaking process of solving the mystery in their exhaustive, publicly-documented hand recount. Unlike experiments the long-running 'audit' theatre clown show still running in Maricopa County, AZ, this audit yielded the answer to the mystery of what happened in Windham. Also: listeners react to Sen. Manchin's obstruction of democracy reform legislation. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'

Topics
Grand Strategy defines the broad goals of nations or even groups. American Grand Strategy is best understood historically, as an amalgam of influences and interests. Is American grand strategy a reaction to events and domestic interests, or is it derived more strategically based on the American place in the world? And what does the history of American grand strategy tell us about its current goals? We speak with three of the authors of Rethinking American Grand Strategy.

Big Oil's 'Black Wednesday'; Trump's delusion
Climate law expert Carroll Muffett delves into several landmark decisions handed down to ExxonMobil, Shell Oil and Chevron, all on the same day, that sent 'shockwaves' through the oil and gas industry. Muffett explains the decisions in courtrooms and boardrooms that mark a sea change in the fossil fuel industry's business model, with profound risks to the global financial system, human rights, and efforts address climate change. Also: Trump may have an insidious reason to push his MAGA Mob to falsely believe he will be 'reinstated' in August.

An update on the insane 'audit' theatre underway in Maricopa Co., AZ - a new analysis confirms our reporting that the private company conducting the 'audit' could add 42,000 votes undetected, and they have irrevocably broken the secure chain of custody for the voting machines and ballots. Election integrity advocate JENNY COHN discusses how the nation's election system became so broken, and warns that time is running out for Senate Democrats to reintroduce election security legislation before of the 2022 midterm elections.
