Volkswagen workers on their historic unionization victory
|
Volkswagen workers in Chattanooga, Tennessee scored an historic victory on April 19, when they voted by a 3-1 margin to join the UAW. That makes Tennessee Volkswagen the first auto plant in the South to unionize by election since the 1940s. While the recent victory was overwhelming, it came only after two bitter organizing defeats for the VW Chattanooga workers, first in 2014 and then in 2019. The organizing victory at VW is one of the single most important wins for U.S. labor in decades, and potentially the start of a much bigger turnaround. Guest host Barry Eidlin talks to auto workers Yolanda Peoples, Renee Berry, and Victor Vaughn -- all deeply involved in the organizing campaign at the Volkswagen Chattanooga plant about how they organized, how they won, and what comes next.

33:59 Dwan Dandridge, CEO of Black Leaders Detroit, on his Ride For Equity.

39:37 Rafael Hernandez on Trash Panda’s Los Angeles Cycling Calendar’s events for Bike Month in Los Angeles.
46:34 NYC’s congestion pricing has set the stage for pedestrian and bike advocates’ dreams to become real, including an east-west protected bike path on 72nd street, protected paths on 3rd Avenue to East Harlem and Broadway to Union Square, and a pedestrian-safer Canal street. The plans are in a recent NYC Department Of Transportation Report, “Connecting To The Core,” and put in context here by Transportation Alternatives’ Communications Director Alexa Sledge.

The GOP is getting an early start on dirty tricks and voter suppression. Ohio's Republican-controlled legislature failed to pass a routine legislative fix to ensure Pres. Biden is on the state's Nov. 2024 ballot. Georgia's GOP Gov. Kemp signed a slew of fresh, new voter suppression laws. Rightwing scheme to confuse voters with multiple bogus candidates has been foiled in Washington State. Wisconsin's progressive Supreme Court majority poised to overturn specious ban on secure ballot drop boxes. Plus our new 'Green News Report.'

Since 2020, Azerbaijan has attacked the Armenian people of Nagorno-Karabakh, or Artsakh, and in September 2023 ethnically cleansed them from their historic homeland.
Armenia has taken legal action against Azerbaijan claiming numerous violations of international law. What legal actions have been taken at both the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. What are the causes of action and what might the consequences and impacts of these legal actions be?
Armenia is under intense pressure to negotiate a permanent peace with Azerbaijan. How could this normalize and legitimize Azerbaijan’s aggression? And what does it signal to aggressors internationally about the likelihood of punishment for this aggression?

Labor Notes & the Labor Movement
|
Barry Eidlin assesses the most recent Labor Notes conference held near Chicago from April 19-21. The Labor Notes conference is the premier gathering of rank-and-file labor activists and organizers from across the U.S. and around the world. This year’s conference was the biggest yet, with over 4,700 people gathered to hear the latest on organizing and contract victories, and to learn about how to build stronger unions and fight the boss better. And, in a bit of serendipity that would have been too much for a Hollywood screenplay if it weren’t true, Labor Notes conference goers got to watch together on the first night of the conference as vote tallies came in from the union election at the VW plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where the United Auto Workers won an historic 3-to-1 victory, organizing the first foreign-owned auto transplant in the South. What does this year’s Labor Notes conference tell us about the state of the U.S. labor movement, and what lies ahead? Barry discusses these questions and more with two long-time Labor Notes conference organizers, Al Bradbury and Jane Slaughter.

ALLISON GILL of the notorious 'Mueller, She Wrote' and 'Daily Beans Podcast' and attorney KEITH BARBER of Daily Kos delve into the legal and political implications of the trial so far. Democrats outperformed the polls in another special election for the US House. A GOP-majority appeals court ruled that PA voters' ballots can be rejected for minor, immaterial errors. The far-right 5th Circuit tossed out Louisiana's new, second majority-Black US house district as 'an impermissible racial gerrymander.'

Please donate to KPFK! The corrupt rightwing supermajority on the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments Thursday on whether U.S. Presidents have 'absolute immunity' for any and all crimes they commit while in office, in turn successfully helping Donald Trump delay accountability in his federal criminal trial over his efforts to steal the 2020 election. With wars still raging in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine, we return to an earlier interview on the origins of war. When and how did war begin?
While some have argued it evolved in early human behavior within forging bands societies, our guests say, that's not true. Forger bands did not wage war.
Then, we explore how war and violent conflict might be resolved.

We explore whether a legal approach is the best way to determine whether political violence and atrocities are genocide or is a political or social approach more effective. And does discourse on genocide crowd out discussions of other crimes, such as war crimes? We draw insights from history and contemporary issues.

The expansion of the vote to women throughout the 20th Century has had an impact on the discourses and politics of war and peace. What is the relationship between women voting, electing women leaders, and women-lead groups in civil society on the issue of war and peace?
Does the expansion of the vote to women lead to the election of women as leaders? And are these leaders more committed to peace than their male counterparts?

President Biden faced noteworthy protest votes against him over Israel's brutal war in Gaza. Donald Trump continued to do worse among Republican voters. Journalist ALEX BURNESS explains two deceptive, under-the-radar ballot initiatives that passed on Tuesday, backed by the state's GOP-controlled legislature, that are likely to unleash chaos in the November 2024 presidential election and be used to criminalize routine election tasks. PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! Pres. Biden unveiled another big plan to relieve student loan debt for 30 million Americans. Corporate media helped Trump deeply mislead voters about his position on abortion rights. Ohio's GOP Sec. of State says Biden won't qualify for the state's 2024 ballot unless Republican lawmakers change state law. The Lever's HELEN SANTORO explains her recent investigations into the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse after it was struck by a mega container ship, including Big Oil's favorite law that could cap the shipping company's liability, and the many infrastructure safety warnings ignored by Gov. Larry Hogan (MD-R).

Russian Elections, Putin's Power & Weakness
|
Ilya Matveev joins us with his insights and analysis of the recent so-called election giving Putin a fifth term in power – an election that was stage-managed and fraudulent, with the exact result ordered from above. What was the point? Repression and persecution of critical voices against the war in Ukraine and Kremlin policy has been stepped up dramatically as has nationalist and anti-Western propaganda. The independent media has been silenced, public displays of opposition are immediately stopped and critics detained with growing sentences in prison. The economy hasn’t tanked, and the war has provided a source for military Keynesianism. Yet Matveev insists that Putin’s being able to order an exact electoral result is a sign of weakness, not one of stability. The horrific terror attack of March 22 underscores that Putin is not managing everything. We end with Ilya’s analysis of the character of Putin’s autocratic dictatorial rule – is it Bonapartist, authoritarian oligarchic capitalist, Stalinist, or fascist, or?

The US Supreme Court overturned Colorados State Supreme Court decision to remove Donald Trump from its ballot based on the 14th Amendments prohibition on insurrectionists holding office. What might this signal about the court and its role in the 2024 election and in electoral politics more generally?
Polls suggest that voters want to know if Donald Trump is a criminal before voting in November. But the Supreme Courts decisions make it less likely that this occurs before the election. What does this mean for the future of the US and for democracy and the constitution?
