Charlie Parker: Bird in Kansas City Recording
|
Maggie's guest on Profiles is Chuck Haddix and they will be discussing Bird In Kansas City (Charlie Parker) Chuck is director of the Marr Sound Archives, a collection of 350,000 historic sound recordings housed in the Miller Nichols Library at the University of Missouri--Kansas City. Haddix also teaches Kansas City jazz history at the Kansas City Art Institute. In 1984, Chuck Haddix aka Chuck Haddock joined the staff of KCUR 89.3 in KC Missouri as a jazz producer. The next year, he began producing the Fish Fry heard Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m.-12 a.m. This new set of rare Charlie Parker recordings, Bird in Kansas City, dating from between 1941-1951, most of them never having been heard before and some never even having been known to exist, chronicle Bird's evolution from a blossoming soloist with the Jay McShann Band into a brilliant improviser who dominated the jazz landscape for decades to come. In addition to two unreleased 78s with the McShann band, this set offers two sets of private recordings made with local musicians and a very relaxed-sounding Parker. https://www.universalmusic.ca/press-releases/modern-jazz-pioneer-charlie-parkers-bird-in-kansas-city-out-now-on-verve-records-universal-music-canada/
