Building Resilience After the Wildfires
|
In this episode, we welcome Ben Loescher, founding principal of Loescher Meachem Architects to discuss the viability of adobe construction in rebuilding efforts in Los Angeles following devastating wildfires. We also share an excerpted discussion between Marysia Miernowska, Director of the School of Sacred Wild and Dastan Khalili, President of the Cal-Earth Foundation, and a short clip from architect and artist Ronald Rael, who teaches architecture at UC Berkeley. His piece, Adobe Oasis, premiered in early March at DesertX Land Art Exhibition in Palm Springs.

Trump/GOP plans to gut Social Security; Trump's ambush of Ukraine's Zelenskyy
|
PLEASE SUPPORT KPFK! Original airdate 3-3-2025. The Trump Administration is making plans to slash the Social Security Administration by as much as half. DAVID DAYEN, investigative financial journalist, explains his new report and the dramatic impact that service cuts will have on beneficiaries and the nation's economy. Fallout grows from Donald Trump's shameful Oval Office meeting in which he berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, 'a day of American infamy' in which Trump seemed to switch sides to support Russia, threatening security alliances with Western Europe. Callers weigh in.

PLEASE Support KPFK! As a government shutdown looms, it's unclear if Senate Democrats have the spine to stand up to Donald Trump, even with the support of nation's largest federal workers union. Federal judge ordered the Trump Administration to immediately rehire thousands of unlawfully fired federal workers. Trump EPA chief's announcement of plans to repeal 31 public health and environmental regulations, was filled with lies and disinformation. Plus our new 'Green News Report.'

PLEASE Support KPFK! Philippines officials arrested their own former strongman president, Roderigo Duterte, on an International Criminal Court warrant alleging 'crimes against humanity,' offering a potentially hopeful lesson for the US on accountability. Donald Trump backed off some of his tariff trade war threats against Canada, but economists worry a 'Trump-cession' is likely. 'Disordered discourse' has a destabilizing effect on democracy. Ukraine Fighting Russian Imperialism for 3 years
|
Less than two weeks ago I moderated a webinar, sponsored by Haymarket Books and the Ukraine Solidarity Network, marking the third anniversary of Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine with Денис Пілаш - Denys Pilash from Kyiv, Russian exile Grusha Gilaeva, and Howie Hawkins from the US Ukraine Solidarity Network, who spent time in Ukraine this year. Days later, the Trump administration laid out its so-called "peace deal” that was more a shakedown than a negotiation, trading an end to the fighting in exchange for U.S. control over Ukraine’s critical minerals, without providing security guarantees —terms already hashed out in a U.S.-Russia meeting in Saudi Arabia, where Ukraine had no seat at the table. This is no peace plan but a surrender, a betrayal of Ukraine's fight for self-determination. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was subsequently humiliated in a televised White House spectacle—Trump mocking his attire, Vance demanding his gratitude, and Ukraine itself being thrown under the bus. So what does this moment signify? The truth is straightforward: Trump has switched sides, and history has taken a darker turn. Trump’s mafia-style posturing, with sycophantic Vance, ever his eager enforcer, can’t obscure what’s really at play—Trump really admires Putin and despises democracy, in Ukraine and beyond. Meanwhile, Putin—buoyed by Trump’s outburst against Zelensky—continues his war of attrition, sending wave after wave of young men to die in the scotched earth of eastern Ukraine. The Russian economy, battered but functional, isn't close to collapse. And while Ukraine is strained and exhausted, relying on conscripts to sustain the fight, Putin is far from achieving military victory. His ultimate goal remains unchanged: total Ukrainian defeat, but he has only managed to take a sliver of Ukrainian territory at the cost of hundreds of thousands of casualties. At this rate, it would take more than a century to conquer Ukraine. Trump’s gambit may offer Putin relief, but Ukraine is not yet at the breaking point where it would be forced to accept Trump’s deal—ceding land to Russia, and mineral wealth to the US. That’s where our guests Denys Pilash, Grusha Gilaeva and Howie Hawkins come in. They’ll unpack these critical developments and what they mean for Ukraine, Russia, and the world.

Charlie Parker: "Bird In Kansas City"
|
“Bird in Kansas City: Charlie Parker” is a brand-new album featuring rarely heard recordings of internationally known Parker playing in his hometown of Kansas City. Two recordings, the Baxter wire recording and a disc recording made by band manager John Tumino, come from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Marr Sound Archives. The music on “Bird in Kansas City” was originally recorded in 1941-1951, beginning when Parker was just 21 years old. “These recordings chronicle Parker’s musical transformation from a budding soloist with the Jay McShann Band into a brilliant improviser who dominated after-hours jam sessions,” said Chuck Haddix (B.A. '97), curator of the Marr Sound Archives and Charlie Parker expert. Haddix is also the author of “Bird: The Life and Music of Charlie Parker.” He worked with jazz collector Norman Saks and Ken Drucker, senior vice president at Verve Label Group, to create the album. Haddix co-produced and wrote the liner notes for the record. “Bird in Kansas City” is available now from Verve Records.

U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) pressed two Trump nominees to explain Trump's exceedingly Russia-friendly actions and policy positions, but their answers were disturbingly evasive. Trump address to Congress; U.S. Supreme Court
|
PLEASE SUPPORT KPFK! The U.S. Supreme Court narrowly rejected the Trump Administration's bid to freeze $2 billion in foreign aid payments to thousands of contractors for work already completed. Donald Trump's speech to Congress on Tuesday night was the longest in U.S. history, vengeful, obnoxiously partisan, and filled with falsehoods. HEATHER DIGBY PARTON, Salon opinion columnist, and 'DRIFTGLASS' of the Pro Left Podcast, offer analysis, insight, and context for the speech, Democrats' efforts to fight for democracy, and much more.

PLEASE SUPPORT KPFK! Donald Trump is bad for business and the U.S. economy. U.S. stock markets plunged in response to Trump's new 25% tariffs against our two largest trading partners and friends, Canada and Mexico. Trump's freeze on federal agriculture funding is hurting farmers, while massive cuts are eroding safety and services at national parks. DOGE is quietly deleting their error-filled false claims of 'savings.' Plus our new 'Green News Report.'

PLEASE SUPPORT KPFK! PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! Original airdate 2-19-2025. Volodomyr Zelenskyy and US assistance to help Ukraine defend against Russia's invasion. Veteran federal prosecutor RANDALL D. ELIASON explains the disturbing resignations of several top-level prosecutors from the Justice Department who refused improper orders to dismiss a criminal corruption case against NYC Mayor Eric Adams, and what it means for the criminal justice system going forward.

DOGE Gaslighting America; Climate change
|
PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! Donald Trump, Elon Musk and their DOGE Bros are gaslighting the nation, unlawfully canceling contracts and laying off workers, while failing to find any actual evidence of any fraud or abuse (other than their own) and lying about it to the public. Musk awarded his own company a massive FAA contract, and called for impeaching judges who rule against DOGE. Trump EPA is trying to roll back the scientific 'endangerment finding' on climate change that underpins federal climate regulations. Plus our latest 'Green News Report.'

Musk-Trump Backlash; Feb. 28 'Economic Blackout' Day
|
PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! Federal employees at the U.S. Digital Service (renamed DOGE Service) resigned in protest rather than use their skills to 'jeopardize Americans' sensitive data' and 'dismantle critical public services.' Europeans reject Tesla cars over Elon Musk's support of far-right extremist political parties. Steep decline in U.S. consumer confidence. JONATHAN SIMON of Who What Why explains the grassroots, national 'Economic Blackout Day' on Friday, Feb. 28th, a day to purchase nothing in protest against Trump/Musk's gutting of federal government services.

DOGE fact check; Why does Trump want to dismantle fed. government?
|
PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! Donald Trump's top campaign donor, billionaire Elon Musk, is accelerating the dismantling of the federal government and the non-partisan civil service. Musk is lying about cutting 'waste, fraud, and abuse.' Treasury Sec. Bessent says they are "re-privatizing" federal government services. By why does Trump want to seemingly dismantle seemingly every federal agency? Callers weigh in.

As Assessment of the Damage Already Done by Musk & Techies
|
Ian Masters begins with Musk lording over the federal workforce issuing insulting directives demanding they justify their existence and hand in their homework like obedient school children. Joining us for an assessment of the damage already done by Musk and his teenage techies is Nathan Tankus, Research director of the Modern Money Network. His writing has appeared in the Review of Keynesian Economics, Naked Capitalism, Financial Times, and The American Prospect, among others. He is the publisher of the popular Substack “Notes on the Crises” which features day-to-day coverage of the Trump-Musk government wrecking crew.

Trump's Betrayal of Ukraine
|
On the eve of the 3rd anniversary of Russia’s brutal war on Ukraine, Trump has saved Putin and sold out Ukraine. With Trump’s administration engaging in so-called peace talks that exclude Ukraine entirely, the geopolitical stakes have never been higher. As Trump embraces Putin’s revisionist narrative — outrageously claiming Ukraine started the war — Ukraine finds itself not only fighting Russian aggression but now also facing an historic betrayal from its most powerful ally. What does this mean for Ukraine’s survival, Europe’s stability, and the broader left struggle against imperialism, authoritarianism and incipient fascism?
To unpack this rapidly shifting landscape, we welcome two incisive voices: Zakhar Popovych, Ukrainian researcher and activist in Kyiv with deep roots in labor and socialist organizing, and Ilya Budraitskis, Russian historian and political theorist now in exile. Together, they analyze the implications of Trump’s concessions to Putin, the resilience of Ukraine, and the urgent need for the international left to rethink its stance in an era of resurgent imperialism. Tune in for a vital conversation on war, resistance, and the future of democracy in a world tilting toward authoritarian rule.

The Trump Administration is actively seeking to destroy the public service and the protections offered by government. What does this mean for the future of the democracy and for the future of the country? Who will will stand up for public services that we've long come to rely on for public safety, clean water, air, health and financial protections? What is the role of the courts in preventing Trump's complete takeover of the government. Can the courts slow down the the destruction of the public service?

Federal Workers SOS Feb. 19; Canadian national boycott
|
Our theme for today’s program is resistance in the time of monsters: resistance to the Trump/Musk wrecking ball that is threatening the well-being of millions of people here and across the globe. Their actions are illegal and constitute a technical coup. The Trump/Musk rampage has galvanized resistance in the courts and on the streets.
Geologist and IFPTE local president Colin Smalley is part of the Federal Unionists Network, or FUN. They have called for a national day of action, an SOS --Save our Services -- for February 19. Colin will fill us in to explain the action and how you can join.
Charlie Angus on Canadian resistance: Trump’s across the board tariffs -- though temporarily paused – threaten economic havoc in Canada, our largest trading partner. It's an unprecedented trade war. The promised tariffs have sparked a spontaneous national resistance across the country and across the political spectrum, uniting Canadians as never before. Canadians are showing no interest in joining the US as the 51st state, as Trump suggests, and are fighting back. We are very fortunate to have NDP MP Charlie Angus/The Resistance with us to talk about the power of the grassroots Canadian boycott and the ways Canadians are coming together to stop the Trump-Musk goon squad reign that threatens Canadian sovereignty.

PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! The Trump Administration is blatantly violating freedom of the press and the First Amendment in blocking AP from the White House and kicking straight news organizations out of the Defense Department. Trump fired the Inspector General of US AID in retaliation for a new report revealing the vast, global, deadly costs of shutting down the agency. A judge in North Carolina is still trying to overturn his Nov. 2024 election loss by tossing the ballots of more than 60,000 voters. DEBRA DICKS MAXWELL, President of the North Carolina NAACP, explains the elements of the case, and the stakes for the state and the nation.

What exactly is the political, physical, and existential meanings of borders? Borders are human creations but often define state and national boundaries and even identities. They define belonging to a nation. And under this new administration, borders have become the most visible feature not just of policy but who belongs in the United States. Our first guest has written a new book on borders and their impact on our conversations on immigration, borders, and belonging. Hiroshi Motomura is the author of BORDERS AND BELONGING: TOWARDS A FAIR IMMIGRATION POLICY.
Then, the Trump Administration's approach to immigration, the raids, mass deportations, concentration camps, and shipping people to Guantanamo Bay, may all be illegal. What is the relationship between law and national values and identity, and what legal changes has President Trump proposed? How are communities responding to ICE?

Public outrage forced the Trump White House to rescind a stunning memo illegally attempting to freeze some $3 trillion in critical, congressionally-approved grants and funding that triggered chaos across the country. Workers successfully unionized a PA Whole Foods store, as Donald Trump fired a Democratic member of the National Labor Relations Board, halting its work. Vaccine science denier Bobby Kennedy, Jr. testified in his Senate confirmation hearing for HHS Secretary. Climate scientist DR. MICHAEL E. MANN discusses his new book examining the dangerous, growing threat of anti-science disinformation, and the insidious, coordinated campaign to block action on climate change.

The Trump administration ordered public health agencies to halt researcher, communications, and more. A federal judge has temporarily halted implementation of a Trump White House memo that unconstitutionally ordered an immediate halt to disbursement of federal funds to programs that serve hundreds of millions of Americans. building defense against Trump’s xenophobic policies
|
President Trump is back in power and immediately moved to carry out his xenophobic, cruel, hateful and racist policies with a slew of unconstitutional executive orders and plans for mass detention and deportation of the nation’s immigrants. We talk to three extraordinary activists whose organizations and coalitions are building effective solidarity and defense for the about to be detained and deported. Victor Narro, UCLA’s long time expert on immigrant rights and low wage workers, works in the sanctuary movement; Nana Gyamfi of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI); and Aquilina Soriano-Versoza of the Pilipino Workers Center of Southern California explain what their Black, Latino and Filipino led and focused coalitions are doing to counter the Trump offensive against immigrants. This is practical solidarity that builds power -- and it is moving and uplifting.

Bike Touring, Motornormativity, and Treating the Public Health Crisis of Oversized SUVs #2503
|
0:57 Cohosts Taylor, Nick, Lindsay and Stacey ponder possible effects of the new administration on bikes, cars, and infrastructure.
4:52 Listener Email: Reese Bastion writes about motonormativity, the acceptance of public hazards from cars where similar hazards like smoking wouldn’t be tolerated. This sparks a discussion about how the framework that led to smoking in public being banned could apply to oversized SUVs.
Listener bike tours:
18:41 Rick Bosacker, M.D., of New Zealand calls from a cruise ship toward the end of a family bike tour of the world’s great and not-so-great bike cities.
27:43 Brett McGraw, from Minneapolis, tours car-centric Los Angeles by bikeshare and transit.
38:03 The “Listening Tour” of Andrew Mohama, who biked home to Chicago from San Francisco, listening to people’s loneliness along the way.
54:37 Bike Thought by Kendra Ramsey, Executive Director of the California Bicycle Coalition.

PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! Federal judge temporarily blocks Donald Trump's order revoking birthright citizenship for certain people, calling it 'blatantly unconstitutional.' CA migrant workers are not showing up to work to avoid ICE roundups. JOHN BERGMAYER of Public Knowledge explains how Trump's new FCC chair, Brendan Carr, is weaponizing the agency to squash press freedom, threatening broadcast outlets like KPFK that air content he doesn't like, and the bonkers rightwing appeals court ruling stripping the FCC of authority to regulate net neutrality for all Americans. New major fire in L.A.; Trump 2.0's first days
|
PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! The Trump Administration is explicitly deploying a 'flood the zone' strategy with a surge of executive actions -- most of them obnoxious, sloppy, offensive, and performative. But not all. Salon opinion columnist HEATHER DIGBY PARTON and 'DRIFTGLASS' of the 'Professional Left Podcast' join us to make sense of this historical moment, from Donald Trump's pardons of violent January 6 insurrectionists, to the Oligarch Inauguration, corruption and lawlessness already underway, the courageous Episcopalian bishop who pleaded with Trump to show mercy to marginalized people, and much more. New major fire erupts in northern Los Angeles County.

PLEASE DONATE to KPFK! The corrupt Trump presidency is underway, with a 'flood the zone' strategy of executive actions moving to dismantle key federal policies governing civil rights, human rights, immigration, public health, Census accuracy, climate change, and much more. Trump pardoned nearly all Jan. 6 insurrectionists, including violent felons who attacked police and leaders of far-right paramilitary groups. Inspiring words from Dr. Martin Luther King. California Burning
|
Catastrophic firestorms have wiped out the LA neighborhoods of Pacific Palisades and much of Altadena. More than ever we miss the sagacity of Mike Davis, who died in October, 2022. On today’s Beneath the Surface with Suzi Weissman we feature Mike’s October 2020 lecture to UMass Amherst’s Feinberg Family Distinguished Lecture Series, moderated by Vijay Prashad. October, as Southern Californians know, is the month of the Santa Ana winds, and Mike began his lecture talking about the 4 million acres of forest burned in what he called the fire year from hell, an almost unimaginable ordeal, in his words, though the Santa Ana winds had not yet begun to blow like dry hurricanes. Though Mike couldn’t imagine the burning of downtown Altadena, or the destruction of the Palisades, Mike knew the outline of the firestorms and disasters to come, and he begins his lecture quoting Ward Moore’s 1947 sci-fi novel "Greener Than You Think" that describes the nightmare devil grass, the monstrous new nature swallowing up everything in its path, replacing native land cover and creating the flammable understory of our fires.

Samuel Ward is one of those activists; an important figure in the African-American activist community working against slavery and racism, whose story is largely lost. Our guest R. J. M.
